The Era May Go, But The Legacy Remains: The Elle Creative Story

Elle September 1988

This week Elle Magazine announced the departure of Creative Director, Joe Zee, who for the past seven years has been a name synonymous with Elle Magazine. His ability to relate to Elle subscribers in his monthly segment A to Zee through witty prose and high-low fashion tips is what has kept the readers and advertisers interest issue after issue. I have been an Elle subscriber since 2008, and have always been impressed with how his styling and creative direction of his cover subjects takes you into the core of a celebrities’ persona through inspirational yet relatable fashion editorials. Joe Zee is the latest creative director to put his touch on the U.S. edition of Elle Magazine, before him came legendary photographer and fashion visionary, Gilles Bensimon.

Eva Mendes, Elle March 2005                                                      Elle September 2003

In 1985, Gilles Bensimon helped to launch the American Edition of the French-based Elle Magazine. His impact on the publication included photographing supermodels of the late 80’s to early 90’s such as Elle Macpherson, Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon, and Claudia Schiffer.  During his 24 years overseeing Elle USA, he shaped the magazine to be a go-to publication for professional women with unique and infectious personalities. From the models that graced the covers in the 80-90’s to the celebrities of the aughts decade the subjects have continuously had an air of accomplishment and innate beauty that subscribers are eager to emulate.

With an updated and cleaner features and editorial layout, introduced in the April 2014 issue, Elle has embraced the technology age in a way that will guarantee a bright future. The question is who will be the creative force to guide its loyal readers into the next era; we wait with baited breath.
